Katrin Andberg Hawkins, CBCC-KA, CDBC
I have been heavily involved in the dog community since 1994. Many years ago, Maplewood Dog Training began as Maplewood Animal Care & Training, a small dog walking and pet sitting business and as my education and experience grew it became the quality and respected dog behavior consulting and training program it is today. Over the past 20 years, my work experiences and education in the veterinary, canine care, behavior and training fields have allowed me to pull from a wide range of resources to assist clients in reaching their training and behavior goals.
I am committed to education and believe that knowledge empowers both my clients and their dogs to embrace positive behavior change and find lasting results. That commitment also includes a dedication to educating myself and remaining current on behavior science research. As a certified behavior consultant, I frequently attend behavior and training continuing education events to maintain various professional certifications and memberships. I also thoroughly enjoy assisting aspiring future dog trainers enhance their education and gain experience through various mentor opportunities.
Over the past decades, many different dogs of varying breeds and mixes, have come through my life and home. Some from rescue or re-home situations, some from breeders; some as puppies, and some as adults. Many arrived with various behavior complaints, and all of my dogs, past, present and those to future come, have been the best teachers I could ever ask for. Currently Tom, a retriever cross from the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, an organization that MDT supports, and Zora, a Cardigan Welsh Corgi, are our resident canine family members. Tom enjoys going on walks, working and keeping Katrin from walking into stuff, and as our newest addition, Zora is reminding me how much I really do love all things puppy (and adolescent!). I have to say, I think my favorite doggie age is adolescence, which many people find most overwhelming!
When time allows I compete in local agility, obedience and rally competitions and with both past and present dogs have competed to the nationals competition level. My foundation as a canine professional was in canine behavior as well as in dog competition sports. In my spare time, I also paints in the oils medium. You can see some of my work at Paintings by K. Andberg or on Facebook. As with other aspects of my life, dogs are my favorite subject to paint.
